VICTORIA CROSS HOLDERS BURIED IN BELGIUM
Why this subject ?
Everything started more than a decade ago. At that time (1995-1996) I was living in the RSA, Durban for professional reasons. During the weekends I started exploring the country. So, I read about “the battlefields” and more specifically ; Rorke’s Drift. Of course, I drove up to this place and I can only tell you : if you ever end up in South-Africa, this is absolutely a “place you have to visit” !!! Not only because of the battle that took place here the 22-23/1/1879, but especially for the fact that the environment has hardly changed since then ! In the local museum for example you will see manuscripts of soldiers stationed in Rorke’s Drift with some drawings of the place at that time. Print these drawings in your mind, go outside the museum and you will immediately see what they have drawn. Indeed, due to urbanization and co., most place in the world look completely different nowadays, but not at Rorke’s Drift.
It was here that I first learned about the Victoria Cross (VC), the highest military decoration which is, or has been, awarded for most conspicuous bravery, or some daring or pre-eminent act of valour or self-sacrifice, or extreme devotion to duty in the presence of the enemy for valour for persons of any rank in the Naval, Military and Air Forces of the United Kingdom, its colonies or territories, and Commonwealth countries that award UK honours; members of the Merchant Navy; and civilians serving under the orders, directions or supervision of any of the above-mentioned forces or services
At this place I learned that, since the introduction of the VC in 1856, the largest number of vc’s were awarded to a regiment for one action. At Rorke’s Drift, eleven Victoria Crosses were awarded. Seven to the 2nd Battalion, 24th (2nd Warwickshire) Regiment of Foot, one to the Army Medical Department, one to the Royal Engineers, one to the Commissariat and Transport Department and one to the Natal Native Contingent.
Once back in Belgium, where I live now , I started, together with some very good friends and family, to get more and more interested in the “local” battlefields; i.e. the World War 1 sites. During one of our visits I suddenly thought : Why not visit, look for all the VC holders graves in Belgium ?
Et voilà.
The Victoria Cross (VC)
As mentioned on Cpt. N. Chavasse’s individual page : up to January 2021 , a total of 1.358 VC’s are awarded. In this total is included the VC for The Unknown American Soldier + 3 VC’s with Bar (= 2 VC’s).These 3 persons are : Noel Chavasse – Charles Upham – Arthur Martin-Leake. (The last 2 were not killed during their actions.)
This means that only 1.355 VC’s are awarded to known individuals.
Lately Australia, New Zealand and Canada have also their own Victoria Cross (not included in the above mentioned figures).
In beneath pdf-file you will find a complete list of all VC recipients. Included the Australian and New Zealand VC’s. The list is sorted per Year (related to the action)/ Name (starting with the first name(s)). It took me quiet some time to compile this list. I gathered the info from all kind of sites , but if you find errors : please let me know (contact page).
Purpose of this part of my website
Most people will never have the opportunity to come to Belgium and do what I can do : visit the graves of all those heroes. Now they can do it via this virtual way.
Via the website : http://www.victoriacross.org.uk, section : Burial locations of Victoria Cross recipients in Belgium, I was able to determine what graves I had to look for. I visited all the graves of VC holders buried in Belgium, included the VC Holders mentioned on memorials.
There are no commercial purposes behind this project. If you like to download the photographs; no problem.
All photographs are taken by myself.
You will see that for every holder several data will be mentioned :
- · GPS address and GPS Decimal Coordinates of the graveyard.
- · Exact reference of his grave (=where can I find the grave).
- · Copy of the page of the register (that you usually find at the graveyard entrance) mentioning what exactly the holder has done.
- · Photographs : overall picture of the headstone, details of it + some of the graveyard.
- · Eventually some comments.
- · At the bottom of some pages you will find a photo and more info regarding the VC holder, but this will be in Flemish (sorry).
Click on the name in red to access the page of the VC holder.
The yellow marked VC holders have extra info.
