Comments :

The headstone is unique in the world.

Indeed, Chavasse was awarded twice the VC ! Consequently 2 representations of the VC appear on his headstone.

Since the institution of the VC in 1856 up to 2020,  there are 1.358 VC’s awarded. Only 3 individuals received the VC two times, Chavasse was 1 of them. Of these three persons, 2 survived their respective wars i.o.w. : Chavasse’s grave is the only one in the world with 2 VC’s on it !

On the internet you can find all kind of information about Chavasse. He was serving in the medical corps. It seems that he had a twin brother. He also had a younger brother who was killed also in WW1 and his name is mentioned on the Menin Gate Memorial in Ypres.

The graveyard is not very large and is “hidden” behind some houses.

If you decide to visit only 1 grave during your stay/trip, I sincerely recommend to visit this one.

I’m not saying this because of “sensational” reasons, but simply because of the fact that Chavasse can be considered as an example , bearing in mind that he was executing his duties unarmed.

There is also a Chavasse VC Memorial site : more info & pictures below.
